2.8 Release Report

Over the weekend of 23 and 24 September, Release 2.8 was implemented. This release focused mainly on technology changes, driven by our ongoing objective of taking advantage of improvements in modern technology.

The major architectural change that occurred was the move from optical disk storage to Centera, which resulted in more direct access to the images stored in Landonline. This meant that there is now real-time back up of images and a reduction in the time required to return to normal image operation after an outage.

The level of changes for the 2.8 release were complex and well tested. However, the response in the full production environment post roll-out can vary from that of the test environment. While we have corrected the immediate issues, we will continue to constantly monitor and review the system to ensure the fixes deliver the desired increase in performance.

On Monday 25 September, customers may have experienced one or more of the following issues:

  1. Prompted to enter login details twice: As a result of the new technologies that were installed, login details are being asked for twice. The first logon allows access to the web server and the other logon accesses the Landonline application.

Work is currently underway to ensure that the system is able to automatically pass these encrypted details from the web server to the Landonline application.

  2. Difficulty with retrieving some images: The Centera image storage system required new references to be added to all of the 14 million images that Landonline holds. These references allow the system to retrieve the image when requested using the new web-based image service. References to a number of these images were not successfully created.

The updating process we ran on Monday night and Tuesday allowed the system to recreate these image references so that they can now be retrieved.

  3. Delay of Notices and creation of some plan generations: These functions use the new web-based image software to create images and there was a temporary loss of connectivity between the image service and the notice and batch servers. This impacted the ability to create an image of either the notice or the plan.

    This has since been resolved.

  4. Attaching documents: The ‘save as' setting had defaulted to a *.temp file instead of the required *.tif file extension.

This default ‘save as' setting bug will be changed in a future release. In the meantime, we have published a known workaround, i.e. manually changing the file setting to *.tif will allow the document to attach successfully.

  5. Cannot copy spatial selection into the spatial search (CDE): This functionality was available in the previous Landonline version (2.7) utilising Powerbuilder 7. The current version of Powerbuilder 10 was not coded to support this functionality.

    LINZ is investigating possible options.

Thank you to all customers who raised these matters with us. We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience during this time.
