NZGD2000 - GEODETIC CONTROL

NZGD2000 Control Density

NZGD2000 control is being provided progressively throughout New Zealand. The priority has been to provide control in Survey Conversion Areas (SCAs). The density of NZGD2000 control in these areas is:

  • Urban areas - 95% of boundary marks shall be no more than 200m from a control mark;
  • Peri-urban areas - 95% of boundary marks shall be no more than 600m from a control mark;
  • Rural areas - 95% of boundary marks shall be no more than 2000m from a control mark.

This provides control at a spacing of approximately 300m, 800m and 3km respectively, although in most cases the control will be at a greater density than this. In order to meet these requirements LINZ contracted the capture of both existing and new control. Where reliable urban or rural control traverses (or Standard Traverses) existed, sufficient observations and marks were captured from those plans to meet the above density requirements. Where there were gaps in the coverage, existing cadastral marks were re-surveyed in terms of the geodetic network.

The development of NZGD2000 control is ongoing. Outside of SCA's, additional control at the above density is being implemented where future cadastral development is expected. Other priorities are the capture of existing rural control surveys and the upgrade of existing NZGD49 trig stations to NZGD2000 status, particularly where they are beaconed and used for bearing.
