DUPLICATES

One of the important changes implemented by the Amendment Act 2002 is the removal of duplicate certificates of title. This change will take effect from the beginning of the Landonline Pilot. The Registrar-General of Land will declare land to be electronic transactions land by placing a notice to that effect in the New Zealand Gazette. From the date specified in the Gazette, (14 October 2002) all land in New Zealand will no longer have a duplicate certificate of title. The electronic register held by LINZ would be the definitive record relating to all land registered under the Land Transfer Act. This means there will be no need to produce duplicate certificates of title with a dealing.

All duplicate certificates of title are deemed cancelled from the date that the declaration takes effect (14 October 2002). LINZ will not be calling in duplicates for any reason. Any duplicates supplied in error will be returned to the lodging party. Certified copies of information held by LINZ will be available for all evidentiary purposes.
