Geodetic trig codes to appear on new Topo50 maps
On 23 September 2009, LINZ will launch the new 1:50,000 scale national map series Topo50, replacing the NZMS260.
The new Topo50 maps will display a trig's geodetic code only. The current NZMS260 map series displays a variety of trig identifiers, e.g. 'L', 'IT XXVII SO' and proper names, e.g. Mt Hector.
Since the conversion of the trig information from analogue cards to a digital database, LINZ has assigned each trig a unique four-character alpha/numeric geodetic code, e.g. A4BC. Feature names, e.g. Mt Hector, will continue to be shown along with a separate geodetic code for the trig.
Advantages of moving to geodetic codes include:
- the name on a trig plate will match that shown on the Topo50 map
- searches of the geodetic database will return a unique result, instead of multiple returns, e.g. there are 497 matches for trig named 'L'.
More information about trigs
More information about each trig, including exact location, is available on the Geodetic Database.

Survey Strategic Context – update on our progress
Today vs Tomorrow is the latest working paper from the NZIS and LINZ Joint Working Group. This paper incorporates industry feedback on the proposed future of the cadastral survey industry, and identifies the challenges we face moving towards that future.
This is significant progress. We are beginning to clarify what we need to focus on to ensure we meet your future goals.
We need your help
We would really appreciate more feedback from a range of customers. Please spend some time thinking about the issues, and let us know what you think. Your feedback will help us to determine the way forward.
Today vs Tomorrow features:
- A consolidated view of the future cadastral survey industry – highlighting the true complexity of interactions and comparisons with the industry today
- Identification of the challenges that will affect the future of the industry, i.e.
- focus on changes and enhancement in the LINZ/NZIS area (the shared view) to increase efficiency and effectiveness
- gain a better understanding of the whole land administration market
- A new, improved format.
What you need to do
Have a read and have your say...
- What do you see as the main challenges moving forward?
- What ideas do you have on how LINZ and NZIS can overcome these?
Please complete the feedback form by 7 September 2009. Your views will be incorporated into the final paper to be developed by late October 2009.
