"Want to reduce re-work? Updated your QA processes recently?"

A recent review of the Risk-based Acceptance Process (RAP) resulted in several recommendations, and highlighted areas where the cadastral survey profession can assist.

George Williamson, a member of LINZ's process improvement team, is overseeing implementation of the recommendations.

"Regularly reviewing quality assurance processes against requisitions and other issues identified from time to time can help reduce surveyors' re-work, and unnecessary LINZ interventions," says George.

George says there are a couple of items that surveyors can follow up on.

Locating sufficient old survey marks

"We're aware of some instances where SG Rule 3B(1)(b) has not been given the attention it deserves," says George. "As a consequence, National Processing will now target this Rule during our 10% quality review of validated datasets. The results of this additional intervention will feed into future RAP design updates."

Rule 3B(1)(b) of the Surveyor-General's Rules for Cadastral Survey 2002/2 requires surveyors to locate sufficient old survey marks necessary to prove the accuracy of the survey and connect the survey to those marks.

Addressing all existing easements

Not addressing existing easements continues to rate as one of the top 10 requisition items.

George says, "This is another area where a little additional effort and updated surveyors' QA processes will significantly reduce re-work."
