Questionnaire – working in non-SDC areas in Landonline
If you work in non-SDC (Survey-accurate Digital Cadastre) areas and encounter problems with the spatial alignment of cadastral parcel data, LINZ is keen to hear from you. We're aware that some surveyors are having difficulty linking new surveys to underlying data and, at times, have to use the exception process.
You're invited to participate in a brief questionnaire to pinpoint the particular issues you're experiencing. LINZ will investigate these and determine whether improvements can be made.
We've so far identified four key reasons why surveyors lodging new surveys in non-SDC areas are requesting the exception process:
- Underlying cadastral parcel shapes in Landonline are incorrect
- Natural boundaries are causing linking issues
- Nodes are missing or there are additional/duplicate nodes
- Cadastral parcels are out of position.
Questionnaire
Due to a technical difficulty the questionnaire will be emailed Monday 5 May.

Survey requisitions update
Improved survey requisition review process
LINZ has streamlined the way it reviews survey requisitions for surveyors and will now accept post approval review requests.
The new process allows surveyors to email a request for a requisition review after:
- having completed all requisition items, and
- approval of the cadastral survey dataset (CSD).
This means a survey's progress will not be held up by the surveyor having to deal with a review of a requisition they consider irrelevant before approval, as requisitions can now be reviewed after approval.
Surveyors are encouraged to use the pre or post approval review process if they disagree with any requisitions. Please use the review form located in the e-survey section of this website.
The resubmission fee will be completely refunded for any review that is upheld in part or in full.
Common requisition items
Incorrect e-survey capture is the most common requisition (R150 'e-survey capture is not correct'), which includes incorrect linking and mark referencing errors.
Correct linking is an important element of an e-survey especially when linking to SDC (Survey-accurate Digital Cadastre) status marks that support a number of automated validation checks within Landonline.
SDC status marks can be viewed in the Landonline spatial view by selecting and applying the layer: Marks/NZGD2000/NZGD2000-SDC. For more information, refer to the Landonline Education section on this website, and the risk-based acceptance process FAQ What is SDC status?
Information on linking documents in e-survey is available on this website, and in the June 2005 edition of Newslink (page 6), published by the NZ Institute of Surveyors.
Allocating new cadastral dataset reference numbers to all new marks is also important. This error is easy to recognise prior to submission but is still occurring. Refer to Newslink's August 2005 edition (page 3) if you require information on mark name capture.
To help surveyors identify current survey validation issues, we have published a list of the top 10 survey requisition items in the e-survey section on this website. The list will be updated monthly.

e-survey enhancement prioritisation project underway
What we do with your Landonline e-survey enhancement suggestions was published in Landwrap late last year.
As part of this work, we're embarking on a research project to improve the way these suggestions are managed and prioritised. The research will focus on prioritisation processes and systems used globally to ensure best practice is followed.
The project has two phases. Phase one will complete an environmental scan and research on global practices; phase two will develop a 'proof of concept' for any changes that are part of recommendations resulting from the research.
External consultants have been engaged to complete the research. We anticipate that the whole project will be completed by August 2008.
For more information, refer to What happens to my suggestions for enhancing Landonline e-survey?

LINZ 2008/09 geodetic survey programme
LINZ carries out annual geodetic control surveys to upgrade existing marks and extend control into developing areas. We also maintain survey mark beacons and other mark protection structures on an ongoing basis.
Feedback from the survey profession, other interest groups and members of the public helps us decide which marks and areas to survey and maintain.
2008/09 geodetic survey programme
LINZ is putting together the 2008/09 geodetic survey programme, which will begin in August 2008.
The programme for this year will be nationwide, focusing on both the continued upgrading of important geodetic marks that have not yet been surveyed and adjusted in terms of NZGD2000 (i.e. less than 5th order NZGD2000 marks), as well as increasing the density of survey control marks in rapidly developing areas where survey activity is concentrated.
Last year, with input from geodetic network users, we were able to:
- upgrade approximately 950 marks to 5th Order standard, and
- maintain beacons and protection structures on approximately 300 existing control marks across the country.
In addition to this work, the programme has enabled the:
- ongoing data capture and re-adjustment of NZGD1949 control to 5th Order standard, and
- continuing development, upgrade and maintenance of the PostioNZ network to facilitate the use of GPS technologies in the control network.
Request for input
LINZ relies on the knowledge of surveyors and others working in local areas to meet the requirements for geodetic control. We would appreciate any information you have about:
- developing areas that require increased geodetic control
- areas where there are gaps and inconsistencies within the existing control, and
- existing high order geodetic marks that require physical maintenance.
You can view the schedules of marks and areas included in the 2007/2008 programme on the LINZ website.
Please forward any recommendations for marks to be upgraded or maintained, and priority areas for new marks, by 30 May 2008, by:
- emailing info@linz.govt.nz with 'Geodetic Programme recommendations' in the subject line
- posting to Customer Services Geodetic, Land Information New Zealand, Private Box 5501, Wellington 6145, or
- faxing to 04 498 3837.

New e-survey tips and hints
The e-survey Tips and Hints on this website are continually being refined and added to.
How to show an Esplanade strip
If you want to know how to show an Esplanade strip in an e-survey, refer to survey plan example DP 369080 on this website.
When creating an Esplanade strip, bear the following in mind:
- do not create parcels in Capture
- add annotations and lines in the Plan Layout tool of Plan Generation, and
- include details about the Esplanade Strip in the Survey Report.
Capture of easements in a Stage Unit Development
Easements may be captured on any stage of a unit development, including the PUD (Proposed Unit Development), but they must only be captured once. Do not extinguish and recapture the easements on subsequent stages.
Refer to Aspatial Parcel Capture for Stage Unit Developments, which has been updated.
Are you using the e-survey best practice tools and tips?
The new self-help information in the e-survey section is ordered by the experience level of the surveyor – novice, experienced and advanced.
Spanning a wide range of topics, the best practice section includes the tips and hints full index.
The e-survey training resources section has all the links and background on training materials provided by LINZ such as the user guide, computer based training (CBT) DVD and the support available to surveyors.
