About e-survey
e-survey allows surveyors to digitally prepare and submit cadastral surveys directly with LINZ from their own office using the Landonline workspace. e-survey has all the functionality of e-search plus, which includes title and spatial searching. With LandXML enabled survey software, your survey data can be transferred directly into Landonline.
Effective 1 September 2007, all survey plans can only be lodged with LINZ electronically through Landonline e-survey.
How e-survey works
e-survey has been designed to remove most if not all of a surveyor's manual workload. It follows these steps:
- Extract - using e-search plus spatial searching functionality, find and extract the cadastral data directly from Landonline (plans, marks, observations, parcels, supporting documents, etc)
- Create – the extracted information is combined with your new data to form a new cadastral survey dataset (CSD). This dataset can then be transferred directly into Landonline using LandXML enabled survey software to create an e-survey.
- Generate Plan – allows users to generate digital survey and title plans and title diagrams from their digital survey dataset. These plans replace paper survey and title plans and diagrams
- Pre-validate - the e-survey can now be pre-validated. This bonus feature enables users to check the e-survey before submitting it to LINZ, for compliance with the Surveyor General's "Rules for Cadastral Survey 2002/3"
- Certify and Submit to LINZ - as in the manual world, only a licensed cadastral surveyor can certify and sign a CSD or e-survey. This is done online, automatically submitting the e-survey to LINZ for validation and approval by LINZ staff.
e-survey benefits
- Reduces workload
- e-survey reduces your survey lodgement workload and can also reduce your overall project time through the import and/or capture of survey information directly into Landonline
- No need to re-key data
- Using LandXML enabled survey software allows surveys to be created without needing to rekey data into the Landonline capture screens
- Reduces effort
- The e-survey plan generation tool reduces the effort required for paper plan preparation and presentation
- Faster processing times
- Electronic lodgement of survey plans is faster than the paper lodgement system
- Reduces lodgement errors
- Pre-validation can dramatically reduce the risk of having to do re-work by checking your e-survey data for compliance with the Surveyor-General's Rules

- e-survey includes all the functionality of e-search plus, which includes spatial searching.
Getting started
New users will receive full details of the training resources, reference materials, and customer and technical support available.
You will need to invest time in learning how to use Landonline e-survey. This won't be achieved overnight, but using the learning and training resources and reference materials available helps a lot.
LINZ has designed a computer based training tool (CBT) for LandXML as a step-by-step tutorial and reference guide for new and existing users of e-survey. Read more information about the LandXML CBT DVD.
We also provide quick reference cards, user guides and help within Landonline to supplement these resources.
